Lottery.co.uk,
an independent web site dedicated to the UK National Lottery,
has announced that the EuroMillions jackpot on Friday 8th May,
2009, could help a UK winner to set a brand new lottery record
for the ever biggest lottery win in Britain. If a UK player wins
the £110 million EuroMillions prize outright they will smash
the previous record of £35.4 million currently held by Angela
Kelly.
Angela,
who lives in Glasgow, won her £35.4 million by winning the
EuroMillions
jackpot in August 2007, and the moment that she did so she became
the biggest lottery winner in the UK. If a single UK player wins
the £110 million jackpot that is on offer, they will beat
her record by almost £75 million.
Although
Angela Kelly is the biggest UK lottery winner at the time of writing,
she isn't the biggest individual EuroMillions
jackpot winner. That particular accolade goes to Dolores McNamara
of Ireland, because Dolores won a jackpot of £77 million
in July 2005. There have been bigger EuroMillions jackpots, but
those have eventually been shared by several winners, leaving
Dolores' record intact for the time being, however, if a single
player wins £110 million this weekend then Dolores' record
will be smashed as well.
Of
course, winning the EuroMillions lottery jackpot requires a hefty
amount of luck. Players need to pick 5 main numbers from the range
1 to 50 and 2 Lucky Star numbers from the range 1 to 9, then match
all of these to win the top prize. The odds of achieving that
feat are 1 in 76,275,360, but there are eleven other prize levels
in addition to the jackpot, so the overall odds of winning any
prize at all are a much better 1 in 24. Lottery.co.uk has a full
listing of the available EuroMillions
prizes together with the odds of winning them.
For
the past six weeks there have been no players who have matched
all of the numbers required to win the EuroMillions jackpot, so
the jackpot has rolled over six times in succession. It is this
extended rollover sequence that has generated the £110 million
jackpot for this Friday's game, and players all over Europe are
already buying their tickets at a frenzied pace.
EuroMillions
players who want to participate in the coming draw without spending
time waiting in queues can now buy their tickets online and be
assured that they will not lose their ticket, and take advantage
of automatically being notified of any winnings by email, regardless
of whether they remember to check the EuroMillions
results themselves.
"The
prospect of winning any EuroMillions jackpot is always exciting,"
said Sam Werren, spokesman for Lottery.co.uk, "but when the
jackpot is worth £110 million that excitement is almost
palpable. We're rooting for all EuroMillions players this week,
and we're keeping our fingers crossed that the jackpot will go
to a single player. If it does, we'll have our first lottery record
breaker of 2009."
